Now that we're over a decade into SoMa's existence, it, like any good drug, has made it difficult to ween yourself off. One of the things that became apparent when trying to move from the big centralized providers to more open providers like the Fediverse and Bluesky, is that I now have to put in the time to rebuild my followers and following, and to be honest I just don't want to do that.
But what I will happily do is "follow" someone who did put in that time. Or some group of people. Why? Because that's how humans offload the cognitive load needed to figure out what speed metal bands are hot right now. Rather than trying to figure out who has that info, I can follow the base at speed.metal, and have a consistent feed of loud and fast music.
