Magic In Story

Planet Nine being a computing platform, anything "magical" within it needs to be defined within the context of the platform itself. This means we need something called a Magic System.

Magic systems, and discussing them, has become a bit more mainstream with the advent of streaming. A topic that has been discussed amongst the streamers talking about these systems is one introduced by Brandon Sanderson, one of the most prolific fantasy authors writing today.

Sanderson said there are two types of magic systems: soft and hard.

Soft magic systems have little to no rules, and allow their creators to basically use magic as an ever-present deus ex machina for their story. For example in the Lord of the Rings, Gandalf possesses soft magic, which allows him to at times do whatever is needed for the story to progress.

Hard magic systems have explicit rules for how they work. Again in the Lord of the Rings, the One Ring is more like a hard magic system--put it on, and you turn invisible, but with some defined drawbacks.

Computing systems like games and platforms are able to construct their own magic systems so it might be fun to think about...
